So, now that the Major League Soccer contract negotiations are over, we find that the minimum salary for each player ($60K) is 1/3 the entire team salary cap for every National Women’s Soccer League team.
This means that 3 minimum-salary men’s professional soccer players make as much as an entire team of women’s professional soccer player.
I understand why NWSL has this salary cap, I understand that many women’s players also have outside sponsorships, I understand that viewership isn’t the same for NWSL teams, I understand the national teams are paying the salaries of some NWSL players- I understand all that. But we have Olympic champions working a second job to make ends meet despite playing for a national team. But all those justifications still add up to one thing: the patriarchy sucks.
Stop telling women they just need to “lean in” to get paid more and start recognizing how pervasive this is, across industries.
